The Spain without websites: a digital x-ray of 505,000 local businesses
A 2026 analysis of 505,549 Google Maps listings captured between October 2022 and 2024: who has a website, who doesn't, in which sectors and provinces. With full methodology, unsoftened limitations and a downloadable aggregated dataset.
How many Spanish local businesses have no website?
47.8% of Spanish local businesses listed on Google Maps have no website linked to their listing: 241,431 out of 505,549 listings analyzed by EBROTECH across 73 sectors and 52 provinces. The gap ranges from 25% in Madrid to 59% in Zamora, and from 7% (escape rooms) to 87% (funeral services).
Data captured between October 2022 and 2024, analyzed in 2026. Full methodology and limitations below. Aggregated dataset available for download (CC BY 4.0).
47.8%

73.1%

15.5%

14.3%
of listings are unclaimed by owners
Almost half of local businesses have no website
Of 505,549 listings analyzed, 241,431 link to no website. The figure is robust: it stays between 47.7% and 49.8% under three different deduplication criteria. And it is a floor, not a ceiling: businesses with no Google Maps listing at all are not even in the picture.
It goes beyond websites: 73.1% publish no contact email, 34% can only be reached by phone, and 13.7% have neither a website nor a phone number on their listing.
From 7% to 87%: the gap between sectors
Sectors with the highest and lowest share of businesses without a website (Google Maps listings, minimum 374 per sector). The full 73-sector table is in the downloadable CSV.
| Sector | Listings analyzed | % without website |
|---|---|---|
| Cemeteries and funeral services | 6,013 | 86.8% |
| Tobacco shops | 3,695 | 82.6% |
| Butchers | 6,570 | 75.1% |
| Electricians | 6,406 | 74.0% |
| Pharmacies | 23,645 | 71.8% |
| Plumbers | 4,474 | 63.1% |
| Restaurants | 68,061 | 62.6% |
| Hair and beauty salons | 16,359 | 57.5% |
| Car repair shops | 10,084 | 52.7% |
| Dentists | 7,921 | 41.1% |
| Law firms | 9,613 | 38.6% |
| Private clinics and health | 8,554 | 22.5% |
| Coworking spaces | 1,237 | 18.6% |
| Interior design | 520 | 15.8% |
| Escape rooms | 640 | 6.6% |
In 10 of the 73 sectors analyzed, more than 60% of businesses have no website. The trades (electricians, plumbers) and traditional retail (tobacco shops, butchers) concentrate the gap; sectors born online (escape rooms, coworking, interior design) barely have one.
Two honest caveats: the funeral figure includes municipal cemeteries, and pharmacies operate under strict online sales regulation, which makes a website less business-critical there.
The map: "emptied Spain" is also the Spain without websites
Provinces with the highest and lowest share of businesses without a website, computed on the 360,313 listings with an identifiable province (71.3% of the sample). Full 52-province table in the downloadable CSV.
| Province | Listings | % without website |
|---|---|---|
| Melilla | 1,278 | 70.0% |
| Ceuta | 1,186 | 66.9% |
| Zamora | 3,809 | 59.2% |
| Cuenca | 4,538 | 58.6% |
| Ávila | 4,323 | 58.1% |
| Soria | 2,527 | 56.3% |
| Teruel | 4,371 | 54.4% |
| Sevilla | 12,006 | 38.6% |
| Valencia | 11,374 | 35.3% |
| A Coruña | 2,330 | 34.0% |
| Barcelona | 14,320 | 27.6% |
| Madrid | 14,011 | 25.1% |
A business in Zamora is 2.4 times more likely to have no website than one in Madrid. Seven of the ten provinces with the widest gap belong to Spain's depopulated interior: the digital divide map mirrors the depopulation map. Where websites are missing, phones are missing too: in Cuenca 26.4% of listings have no contact number, versus 8.4% in Madrid.
Highly rated, yet invisible
- 76,996 businesses rated 4.5 stars or higher have no website linked.
- 22,260 businesses with over 100 reviews have no website either; 16,438 of them are restaurants.
- 51% of rated businesses score 4.5+ and only 3.7% fall below 3: the average rating barely differentiates any more. Review volume does (median: 15).
- Businesses with a website hold a median of 21 reviews vs 8 for those without: 2.6x more. Correlation, not causation, but it draws two clear speeds.
- On top of that, 14.3% of listings with available data remain unclaimed by their owners: 55,591 orphan listings nobody manages.

Methodology and limitations
What we analyzed. 505,549 Spanish Google Maps business listings across 73 sectors, extracted by scraping (Outscraper plus an in-house pipeline). Only anonymous aggregates are published: no data on individual businesses.
When. 93.3% of the listings were captured in October 2022 and 6.6% in 2024 (email verification layer). The analysis is from 2026. Part of the gap will have closed since capture; if you cite the figure, cite the time window too.
What "no website" means. That the Google Maps listing links to no website. A business may own an unlinked site (overestimates the gap) or link a dead one (underestimates it). HTTP status was not verified.
Biases we accept. Only businesses with a Maps listing are included, so Spain's real digital gap is larger. The sample is not a census: it depends on the sectors scraped. Publication threshold: 300 listings per segment. Residual duplicates ~8.8% (the headline figure is robust: 47.7-49.8% under strict dedup). Province identifiable in 71.3% of listings: territorial tables use only that subset. No data on the software or tools businesses use is available, so no claims are made about that.
